Dr Mumbo

Binge aired a show about a drag queen… but with all its gay references erased

The arrival of June brings Pride Month and to celebrate, Foxtel’s streaming service Binge debuted a fabulous new series – minus most of the glitter.

The long-awaited arrival of Trixie Motel, which sees drag queen Trixie Mattel and partner David Silver renovate a run-down Palm Springs motor-in, left fans of the RuPaul’s Drag Race alum disappointed by a very unusual version shown.

Not a single gay thing to see in Binge’s new show.

Dr Mumbo will let the lady in question speak for herself.

“I just found out Trixie Motel is on a network in Australia where they’ve edited out every reference that David and I are together,” Mattel said on the Very Delta podcast.

“So, it’s Trixie Motel, but it’s just a couple of guys. I’m like, so if you’re going to edit out all the parts where I’m gay, but not edit out the fact that I’m in drag… do you believe people watching this think it’s just some scrappy young girl and her renovation?

“Don’t fucking buy my show, stream it (or) put it on your platform if you’re going to edit out parts of me that you don’t like.

“That’s so fucked up.”

Yep. Binge bought a show about a drag queen and erased the gay parts, which is a feat so spectacular it’s almost worthy of celebration in itself.

What’s left? The closing credits?

Binge believes this is a heterosexual cis woman.

A baffled Dr Mumbo went to Binge to ask what in the high-heeled hell happened.

Their spokesperson wouldn’t offer an explanation on the record, but it’s understood the censored episodes were delivered that way.

So, Dr Mumbo asked distributor Warner Brothers to spill the tea. Again, no-one would speak on the record, but it was confirmed that “the incorrect file” was sent to Binge.

The error has now been rectified.

Which begs the question… who was that file originally meant for?

Dr Mumbo heard on the grapevine the very sanitised cuts were intended for a territory with, shall we say, conservative values.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall of living rooms watching a larger than life gal and her boyfriend paint an old motel pink.

Meanwhile back at home, enraged fans who flooded Binge’s social media channels received the same vague explanation as Dr Mumbo about how a fail as bemusing as this could occur.

The shade of it all.
