Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 1,200 in Q4 2023, versus 2,344 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 8% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Wing Aviation filed the most robotics patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 30 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 10 in the previous quarter. It was followed by SZ DJI Technology with 22 robotics patent filings, Skydio (17 filings), and Toyota Motor (14 filings) in Q4 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 35% share of total patent filings
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 35%, followed by China (12%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by the US was 17% higher than the 18% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
