Matildas kick goals for Seven, as Ashes make splash for Nine

The Matildas may have lost to Nigeria last night, but Seven certainly came off winners, with the game being last night’s most-watched program across the country.

Last night’s match pulled just shy of 900,000 in the five metro markets, with Seven reporting an average audience of 1.49 million: a national broadcast audience of 1.35 million viewers on Seven, plus another 142,000 viewers on 7plus.

The Matildas v Nigeria game won the 25 to 54s bracket, and 16 to 39s, with the post-game ranking #7 overall for the night.

According to Seven, its coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has so far reached 6.68 million broadcast viewers, with a whopping 66 million minutes of soccer being watched on 7Plus.

Given Australia will retain the Ashes thanks largely to a drizzly British day, it’s not surprising the shine has worn off slightly as we reach day one of the Fifth Test – but the match still managed to draw 487,000 in the five metro markets.

Even the pre-match slipped into the top 20: a pleasing result for Nine, considering the damp end to the series.
