Nine smashes a ratings record while SBS’s surprise hit trumps MasterChef

Nine’s coverage of State of Origin Game I gave the network a soaring win with a 50.5% overall share on Wednesday night, as the match aired to almost two million metro viewers.

The match had 1.981 million metro viewers, while the pre-match coverage aired to 998,000 and post-match coverage to 712,000. And the network set a new record for BVOD viewership.

Hamish Turner, director of 9Now and programming, said: “With an audience of more than 3.4 million viewers, State of Origin I was the biggest Total TV audience for an Origin in five years.

“9Now once again broke records, with a BVOD reach of 815,000, and an average of 536,000, illustrating the strength of live event streaming.

“It was a thrilling game and it talks to the strength of State of Origin. Bring on the second game from Suncorp Stadium.”

Seven News was bumped from the top spot to third as a result, with 955,000 metro viewers, followed by Seven News at 6:30 with 880,000, Nine News with 771,000 and Nine News at 6:30 with 766,000.

In entertainment, The Chase Australia had 558,000 metro viewers, wile Home and Away had 423,000. MasterChef Australia aired to 402,000 metro viewers and Nine’s Tipping Point to 263,000.

As mentioned, Nine dominated in overall share on Wednesday night with 50.5%. Seven followed with 17.4%, Ten had 13.2%, the ABC had 12.1% and SBS had 6.8%.

The top rated primary channel was Nine, as mentioned, with 44.8%. 7Two remained as the top rated multichannel with 2.6% share.

Seven News retained the #1 spot in the latest Daily Consolidated 7 Total TV Report for 24 May, with a Total TV audience of 1.492 million, a 3% uplift and 45,000 on BVOD.

Meanwhile, SBS surprise hit Alone Australia had the biggest uplift of 135%, a Total TV audience of 899,000, and 259,000 on BVOD. The network’s Blue Lights also had a huge uplift of 125%, with a Total TV audience of 297,000 and 64,000 on BVOD.

Alone Australia is now the most-watched original production in SBS history, and its highest rating program, with the Total TV audience for episode one now at 1.4 million.

In Total TV, the show has become the most watched in the 25-54 key advertising demo, beating MasterChef Australia and Travel Guides.
