Scire appoints first editor-in-chief from Nine’s SMH and The Age
Scire, the new online news publication founded by Chris Janz and David Eisman has appointed its first editor-in-chief.
The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age’s John McDuling is set to join the company, having previously worked with Janz on the ‘Project Blue’ team, to transform Fairfax’s digital strategy in 2016.
Janz, former Fairfax and Nine executive, has also been revealed to be the company’s chief executive.
McDuling joins Scire from Nine where he is national business editor at both the SMH and The Age, leading both papers’ coverage of companies, markets, finance, technology and media.
Janz said: “John is an incredibly talented editor and writer, who truly understands both the Australian business landscape and the opportunity for a new publication focused on insightful, original reporting.”
“He has an eye for talent and stories, and can challenge accepted norms to build something better.”
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime and I can’t wait to get started,” said McDuling.
Scire’s journalism is set to cover business, technology, politics and power, with the company looking to disrupt Australia’s legacy media structures.
It’s understood Scire is set to launch in the second half of 2023, aimed at a “business” audience.
McDuling is a great hire. Well liked, well respected, knows how to run a team.
The big question remains on how much these journos will cost the business and how much will the subscription rate be? Who’s also heading up a sales team? Eisman is a growth guy but not necessarily a salesman – will Scire have ads?
