Karl’s cocaine gag falls flat and other awkward Logies moments
Karl Stefanovic is no stranger to causing uncomfortable moments at television’s night of nights, but last night’s effort was in a class of its own.
The Today host was on stage at the TV WEEK Logie Awards, now hosted by Nine rival Seven and staged in Sydney, when he tried his hand at some unscripted comedy.
Earlier in the night, retired Sunrise star David “Kochie” Koch had mentioned that Stan original series Bump was his favourite show of 2023.
A brief and fairly forgettable remark for most, but not Stefanovic.
“I did want to just check something,” he said, smirking. “I’m pretty sure I heard Kochie say before that he loves Bumps.”
After an extended pause, Stefanovic continued: “Bump’s third season. Anyway, that’s the headline tomorrow morning.”
The joke, which Dr Mumbo understands was a reference to key bumps of cocaine, fell flat and the ballroom was largely silent as a camera cut to a clearly confused Koch.
It was one of several cringe-worthy moments throughout the night.
Comedian and Have You Been Paying Attention regular Ed Kavalee dropped a pearler that Seven executives were likely to have loathed.
While accepting an award for Channel Ten’s Have You Been Paying Attention, Kavalee pretended to be reading from co-star Sam Pang’s acceptance speech, should Pang later win for The Front Bar – a Seven show (Pang has shows on both networks).
“It’s an honour to be on Seven, just like my mentors Andrew O’Keefe, Craig McLachlan and Ben Roberts-Smith,” Kavalee ‘read’, to plenty of audible gasps from the audience.
As the clock ticked close to midnight, the event finally arrived at its final and much-anticipated moment – the awarding of the coveted Gold Logie.
Small screen legend Daryl Somers was given the honour of presenting the shiny statue and clearly relished the opportunity.
Somers dragged out a flat gag that saw him attempt to auction off the prize, but after four long and boozy hours, no-one was overly interested.
Unsurprisingly, given Seven’s saturation ‘Onya Sonia’ campaign, TV’s most prolific host Sonia Kruger was announced the winner.
Given the airtime her network invested in pleading with viewers to vote for her, Dr Mumbo is shocked Kruger didn’t at least consider what she might say. It could’ve saved her from a rambling and somewhat embarrassing acceptance speech.
After declaring, “I think people are over Hamish Blake” she thanked her family but joked she’d forgotten their names.
Nine’s State of Origin coverage winning of SBS’s World Cup coverage is an utter disgrace and speaks volumes of the industry as a whole.

Somers was exceptionally ordinary, from the awkward congratulating of Pang to his auction ridiculousness which went nowhere. Quite embarrassing really.
