‘We used to have a 3:30am start’: Fear & Greed on finding balance in a ‘shambolic’ schedule

Producing a podcast like Fear & Greed is not for the faint of heart.

The popular business title – co-founded by media stalwarts Sean Aylmer (ex-Fairfax editorial director), Michael Thompson (ex-head of content at Macquarie Media) and Adam Lang (ex-CEO of Macquarie Media) – has a goal of making business news more accessible to the general public, and is well on its way of achieving it.

However, despite their combined media expertise, Aylmer told this week’s Mumbrellacast that a typical production day still looks pretty “shambolic” for Fear & Greed. The intense level of output (usually two to three episodes daily, including a standalone interview) means the team was getting up at 3:30 in the morning at one stage.

But now, seeking a production-life balance amongst the chaos, Aylmer and Thompson have transitioned into an overnight model for sustainability.

This May, Fear & Greed celebrated its third birthday, having witnessed much turbulence in the business world in its short time. When asked about what they think of the competitive landscape for business podcasts and where to next for Fear & Greed, Aylmer and Thompson had a fair bit to say.

Catch the full interview on this week’s Mumbrellacast, after a recount from the team of what turned out to be a big week of sports news.

As the first game of FIFA Women’s World Cup approaches, drama has emerged elsewhere in the sports world, as the 2026 Commonwealth Games is now without a host – following the Victorian Government’s decision to pull out of its hosting duties. The team looks at what the commercial world is thinking about both events.

  • FIFA Women’s World Cup as a platform of inspiration (9:42)
